A little history

The Taj Mahal is one of the world’s most celebrated romantic structures. It is an ornate mausoleum (tomb) built by Mughul emperor Shah Jahan for his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal.

  • By the way, Mumtaz was one of the three wives of Jahan. But, she was his favorite. He bestowed her with the name Mumtaz Mahal meaning “Jewel of the Palace”. Also granted her the highest honor of the land – the royal seal – Mehr Uzaz. The couple shared a deep mutual love and affection not usually seen between a husband and wife.
  • In 1631 Mumtaz died during the birth of the couples fourteenth child. As an embodiment of his love and devotion to her, Jahan ordered the construction of the Taj Mahal to house her body. How freaking romantic is that?!

The Taj Mahal took 22 years to build, and was finally completed in 1653. It required the labour of more than 20,000 workers, along with some 1,000 elephants. Its build is of shimmering white marble. It changes color based on how the sunlight or moonlight hits its surface.

Chief architect Ustad Ahmad Lahouri overlooked the construction of the Taj Mahal. He is also known for designing the Red Fort in Delhi.

Helpful tips for your visit

If you plan to visit this bucket list-worthy landmark, here are a few tips you should know before you go.

Tip #1

  • Do some preliminary research. I recommend reading up on the Taj Mahal before you go so you don’t have to rely on tour guides. The official Taj Mahal website is a helpful resource.

Tip #2

  • Timing is everything. The Taj Mahal opens from sunrise to sunset every day except Friday. But, the absolute best time to go is right at sunrise. There are way less people getting in your shots and the best lighting for photos. Plan to arrive at the East Gate by 5:30 am. The ticket counter opens at 6:00 am and a line will start to form before that. Note: As soon as you walk through the gate, be sure to snap that token photo right away.
As soon as you walk through the gate, be sure to snap that token photo right away. You may need to be a little aggressive to keep strangers out of you picture, but it’s worth the shot.

Tip #3

  • Travel with few items. You can only bring a small bags with bare essentials. To maintain the grounds, there are many restrictions on what you can bring in with you. Items not allowed include drones, tripods, food, and other electronics besides a camera. More information on restrictions is on the official Taj Mahal website here. Note: There is a separate line you’ll have to get in if you need a bag checked, so save yourself some time and don’t bring a bag.

Tip #4

  • Escape the crowd. Veer off towards the gardens to the left or right, or visit the Assembly Hall and Mosque on either side. These spots are prime real estate. Here you will be able to capture unique angles of the Taj Mahal, and avoid hundreds of people in you personal space.
